Upgrading Your Orchestral Instrument

After a few years of musical study, a student is already outgrowing their beginner instrument both physically and musically. A musician's instrument should grow with them. This means it's time to step up to a more advanced, higher-quality instrument that will complement their developing music skills.

Advantages of step-up instruments
- Fuller, more resonant sound
- Clearer, more articulate tone
- Quicker response time and easier tone production
- More powerful projection
- Better dynamic expression and control

"How advanced of an instrument is needed at this stage of musical study?"

Intermediate instruments are designed to meet the needs of advancing musicians. Flamed, seasoned maple wood gives them a bigger, fuller sound with an open and clean tone.  Careful setup by our in-house orchestra experts makes these instruments both more resonant and easier to play. Higher quality bows handle more sensitively, making advanced articulations easier and allowing musicians to play more expressively. Intermediate instruments are popular with junior high and high school orchestra students but they’re also an excellent choice for beginners who want the superior tone and playability advantages offered by these instruments.

Performer instruments are often made by hand. Constructed of select spruce and highly figured maple and beautifully finished with hand-applied varnishes, these instruments  are carefully graduated and precisely voiced to produce a rich, pleasing tone. Our luthier and string technicians give individual attention to each instrument, to ensure evenness of tone and accurate articulation throughout its entire range. Performer instruments are designed to facilitate advanced techniques and allow more expressive playing from serious music students in both high school and collegiate music programs.

Master instruments are handmade from the finest available materials by master craftsmen and personally fine-tuned by our expert luthier to meet the demands of the most discerning musicians. These fine instruments are often found in the hands of professional musicians, graduate-level music students, college professors, and symphony players. Each master grade instrument is a work of art unto itself, and has its own unique voice that will improve over time like fine aged wine. Selecting a master grade instrument represents an exciting investment in a musician’s future, as these instruments are more than just tools for musical expression - they are a performer’s teacher, partner, and companion along their musical journey, and become a key component of the musician’s signature sound.
